THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT FLORISTS
When you are walking down the street and see a lady arranging her flower, at least once you must have thought, “seems like such a nice job, all you have to do is arrange flowers in pretty ways”. After you know these little-known things that perception might change. The floral decoration industry is extremely competitive and to be honest pretty difficult to maintain.
THEY HAVE TO WAKE UP EXTREMELY EARLY
As the team of Beet & Yarrow Florist puts it, florists have to be out of the house by 5 am latest. The job is not just to decorate the flowers in a pretty way. The procurement of the right flowers can also get competitive, you have to reach and make early calls to get the flowers you wanted or if you have a special order for some rare flowers you have to source them. The first set of deliveries are usually sent by 9 am for which the process has to start pretty early in the morning. Some people wake up even earlier than that, at about 3-4 am to procure the right flowers at the wholesale market
THE JOB REQUIRES MUSCLE QUITE LITERALLY
Flowers from afar look pretty and light and fluffy, but when you have to unload and load hundreds of plants and flowers, the entire process can require a good set of arms and legs. Even the entire process of washing and sorting the plants and then cleaning the debris can be taxing as most of the day is spent on legs. Florists rarely get to sit in their day.
SEARCHING FOR FLOWER CAN BE PRETTY TOUGH
When customers make fancy and rare demands, no business owner will say no to an order. But a lot these special demands include flowers which are not easily available at the nearest wholesaler. This process can take a lot of time, you have to make the right calls and then bargain for the right price.
TIME IS KEY
The perfect analogy would be the fishing industry. No chef can order their fish too much in advance as it is a highly perishable good, same goes in the floral industry. If someone orders their flower too much in advance, then the look won’t be as fresh, and the arrangement won’t last as long. The timing of placing orders for flowers have to be just right.
